Standard Specification
International environmental testing standards that establish uniform procedures for determining the ability of electrotechnical products to withstand high humidity conditions provide a consistent framework for quality assurance. The standard iec 60068-2-78 defines a damp heat, steady state test method designed to evaluate the suitability of equipment for transportation, storage, and use under high relative humidity. It specifies the test conditions, including temperature, relative humidity, and exposure duration, to ensure that test results are reproducible across different testing laboratories.
Environmental Chamber
Testing under this standard requires a chamber capable of maintaining a constant temperature and relative humidity with high precision over long periods. The moisture must be introduced in a way that prevents condensation from forming directly on the test specimen. Standard parameters often specify a temperature of forty degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of ninety-three percent.
These conditions must be verified periodically using calibrated temperature and humidity sensors placed within the working volume of the chamber.
Operational Procedure
The test specimen is introduced into the chamber, which is then gradually brought to the specified temperature and humidity levels. This gradual transition prevents thermal shock and condensation on the surfaces of the specimen. Once the target conditions are reached, they are maintained for the duration specified by the relevant product standard, which can range from several days to several weeks.
After the exposure period, the specimen is allowed to recover under standard atmospheric conditions before final electrical and mechanical measurements are performed.
Technical Limitation
This standard does not simulate condensation effects or the corrosive influence of industrial pollutants that might coexist with high humidity in the field. It is designed solely to evaluate the effects of moisture absorption and transport through insulating materials or protective seals. If the test specimen requires evaluation for condensation or salt spray resistance, other standards in the iec 60068 series must be applied.
