Pick Instrument
Precision vacuum tools facilitate the high speed placement of surface mount components from their carrier tape onto a printed circuit board. Each pick and place nozzle is designed with a specific tip geometry to match the size and weight of the part it carries. The internal bore must provide enough suction to hold the component securely during rapid lateral movements.
Materials such as steel, ceramic or plastic are chosen based on the fragility of the component being handled.
Operational Calibration
Automated systems use vision sensors to verify the alignment of the component on the tip before placement. A pick and place nozzle must be centered correctly within the machine head to prevent rotational errors or part drops. Periodic cleaning is required to remove solder paste or dust that could block the vacuum path and reduce the holding force.
Wear on the nozzle tip can lead to inaccurate placements or damage to the component casing.
Tool Selection
Choosing the correct size for a specific package prevents air leaks and ensures a stable grip during the assembly cycle. If a pick and place nozzle is too small, it may not lift the part, while a tool that is too large can interfere with adjacent components or pick up two parts at once. Specialized tips with soft rubber surfaces are used for sensitive components like light emitting diodes to avoid scratching the lens.
Manufacturers often provide a matrix of nozzle sizes for each machine model. High precision nozzles for tiny passive components like 01005 resistors require hardened materials to resist the abrasive effects of constant contact with the ceramic bodies. These tools are inspected under magnification to detect cracks or chips that could compromise the vacuum seal during the high speed pick cycle.
Maintenance Protocol
Checking the vacuum pressure and the spring tension of the nozzle holder ensures consistent performance. When a pick and place nozzle fails to release a part, it often indicates a buildup of static electricity or a contaminated vacuum filter. Regular replacement schedules prevent the erosion of placement accuracy over millions of cycles.
