Pressure Equalizer
Porous membrane constructed from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene designed to block liquid water while allowing the free passage of air and vapor. Integration of hydrophobic ePTFE vents prevents enclosure deformation caused by rapid thermal changes. This component relies on low surface energy to repel droplets at the microscopic level.
Airflow Utility
Deployment of hydrophobic ePTFE vents enables continuous venting in outdoor electronics to eliminate the risk of vacuum formation. It reduces the strain on mechanical gaskets that would otherwise be forced to resist heavy differential pressures.
Filtration Performance
Microporous structure size excludes dust and larger particles while permitting gaseous molecules to travel through the material. Saline water beads up on the surface rather than soaking into the interior, maintaining dry conditions for circuit boards. Long-term performance is eroded by the accumulation of oils or surfactants which lower the surface tension and cause wetting.
Mechanical protection is usually provided by a plastic cap to prevent physical damage from high-velocity particles.
Rating Threshold
Compliance with ingress protection standards depends on the burst pressure limit of the specific membrane used in the device. Installation procedures define the torque required to ensure the vent threads form a secure bond with the housing.
