Mechanical Support
Precision machined mandrels without end disks provide the primary winding surface for high performance fibers or fine wires. Using a flangeless spool allows for high density winding without the risk of filament snagging on side walls. These structures facilitate the seamless transfer of material to subsequent processing stages or specialized deployment canisters.
Winding Precision
Helical patterns are laid down with extreme accuracy to ensure the material remains stable without lateral support. Computer controlled winding heads maintain constant tension to prevent the lower layers from crushing under the weight of the outer wraps. If the tension profile is incorrect, the entire pack can collapse or bulge during thermal cycling.
Tapered wind profiles often compensate for the absence of flanges by creating a self-supporting geometry.
Material Integration
Optical fiber gyroscopes frequently utilize these cores to minimize the total package volume. The absence of traditional ends reduces the weight of the sensor assembly while allowing for potting compounds to penetrate the entire winding. Adhesives secure the outer layer of the coil to maintain structural integrity during high vibration events.
Dimensional Tolerance
External diameter and surface finish are verified using non contact laser micrometers. Even a minor surface imperfection on the barrel can introduce micro bending losses in optical fibers. Flatness and circularity tolerances are usually held to within a few micrometers to ensure consistent performance.
