Radial Limit
Defined regions near the periphery of a semiconductor disc are excluded from technical specifications and quality measurements. Wafer edge exclusion accounts for the non-uniformity of film thickness and the presence of mechanical damage caused by handling equipment. It defines the usable area where the performance of the fabricated sensors can be guaranteed.
Process Limitation
Lithography and etching processes often exhibit instabilities near the physical limit of the substrate. The width of the wafer edge exclusion is determined by the capabilities of the production tools and the requirements of the final application. Typically, this zone extends three to five millimeters from the outer rim.
Data Filter
Software algorithms remove data points collected within the prohibited zone to prevent the skewing of statistical results. Applying a wafer edge exclusion ensures that the reported mean and standard deviation represent the quality of the active device area. This filtering is necessary when evaluating the total thickness variation of a silicon lot to avoid including measurements from the tapered periphery.
Accurate mapping of the exclusion zone prevents the incorporation of edge defects into the baseline noise floor of the instrument.
Yield Impact
Usable area determines the number of functional dies that can be harvested from a single substrate. Increasing the wafer edge exclusion reduces the net die count but improves the reliability of the remaining components.
