Statistical Evaluation
Probabilistic quality metrics are used to track the percentage of devices that meet all specifications at the end of the production line. Conducting sensor yield analysis helps identify which steps in the manufacturing process are causing the most failures. The analysis includes the entire journey from the raw silicon wafer to the final packaged unit.
Defect Mapping
Patterns of failure on a wafer often point to specific issues with the lithography or etching equipment. If the center of the wafer has a higher success rate than the edges, it might indicate a problem with the chemical vapor deposition. Technicians use this data to adjust the machines and improve the output of the next batch.
Commercial Viability
High costs result from low yields, as the expense of the failed units must be covered by the ones that pass. Improving the pass rate by a few percentage points can substantially change the profit margin of a product line. Management uses these reports to decide where to invest in new hardware.
Sample Size
Data must be collected over thousands of units to ensure the trends are not the result of random chance. Small batches do not provide enough information for a defensible statistical claim.
