Structural Decoupling Method
Structural mounting strategies prevent the transmission of package-level stresses to the sensitive resonant structures of a micro-electromechanical device. By utilizing central anchor isolation, a manufacturer ensures that the vibrating mass remains unaffected by the expansion or contraction of the surrounding ceramic or plastic housing. The point of contact between the chip and the frame is reduced to a single, centrally located pedestal.
Vibration Management
External energy enters a sensor through its attachment points and can disrupt the delicate balance of the proof mass. When central anchor isolation is implemented, the symmetrical design allows thermal expansion to occur radially from the center without bending the sensing fingers. Such symmetry preserves the frequency stability of the oscillator under varying thermal loads.
Reduced sensitivity to board-level bending improves the overall reliability of the instrument in automotive or industrial environments.
Frequency Protection
Frequency protection requires that the resonant modes of the sensor remain separated from the noise floor of the operating environment. Effective central anchor isolation minimizes the coupling between the parasitic modes of the package and the functional modes of the silicon. Lab testing confirms this isolation by measuring the Q-factor of the resonator while applying mechanical strain to the substrate.
A high Q-factor indicates that energy is not leaking through the anchor into the dampening materials of the base.
Thermal Stability
Linearity improves when the mechanical null point stays fixed. Even in extreme conditions, central anchor isolation maintains the alignment of the sensing electrodes.
