Electrical Connection
Electrical contact housing utilizes a movable lever or locking slider to establish a secure electrical connection with a flexible cable without applying force during insertion. The zero insertion force connector governs the damage-free termination of polyimide flex circuits to rigid printed circuit boards. It stops applying to standard crimp terminals or friction-fit board-to-board connectors.
Contact Mechanism
Locking action is achieved by engaging an actuator. Once the flex cable is fully inserted, the zero insertion force connector clamp is closed, which presses the internal contact springs against the gold-plated pads of the cable. This mechanism ensures uniform contact force and prevents damage to the delicate copper traces.
Fatigue Resistance
Durability of the connection relies on the elimination of insertion wear. Utilizing a zero insertion force connector allows assembly workers to insert and remove the flexible cables multiple times during prototype testing without degrading the electrical contact area. This makes them ideal for manufacturing environments with high diagnostic requirements.
Industrial Robustness
Mechanical retention is a critical variable in high-vibration applications. In automotive or aerospace electronics, the zero insertion force connector must be specified with a locking lever that prevents the cable from backing out under vibrational stresses. Some designs feature additional locking ears for enhanced retention force.
