Sealing Capability
Environmental standard designates a specific rating of enclosure resistance against the entry of dust and prolonged immersion in water under specified pressures. The IP68 ingress protection governs the structural integrity of sensor packaging exposed to harsh, wet, or submerged outdoor environments. It ceases to apply if the housing is opened or if the mechanical seals are compromised.
Testing Protocol
Verification of this rating requires testing the enclosure under conditions defined by the manufacturer and the standard. An IP68 ingress protection rating is validated by submerging the device in water for a continuous period, typically at least one hour at a specified depth. No water must enter the internal electronics compartment during this test.
Environmental Resilience
Sensor durability is achieved by selecting stable materials for gaskets and O-rings. Exposure to sunlight, chemicals, or temperature extremes can degrade these seals, leading to a loss of the IP68 ingress protection over time. Regular inspection of seals is necessary for long-term field deployments.
Design Constraints
Enclosure design must balance sealing requirements with the need to transmit physical signals. Achieving IP68 ingress protection in pressure sensors requires the use of specialized hydrophobic membranes or oil-filled metal diaphragms that transmit pressure while preventing liquid water from reaching the silicon die.
