Seebeck Junction
Micro-scale temperature sensors constructed by depositing overlapping dissimilar conductive films onto insulating substrates measure rapid thermal transients. A thin film thermocouple operates on the Seebeck effect, generating a thermoelectric voltage proportional to the temperature difference between hot and cold junctions. Sputtered thermoelements such as platinum and platinum-rhodium alloys provide direct contact surface measurements without altering host component thermal mass.
Deposition thicknesses below one micrometer ensure minimal flow disturbance in aerodynamic or fluidic applications. The measurement boundary is governed by physical junction size and maximum operating temperature of the deposited thin films.
Dynamic Response
Ultra-low thermal mass enables sub-millisecond response times to transient temperature fluctuations on turbine blades and internal combustion engine surfaces. Physical vapor deposition guarantees intimate contact between sensor films and substrate, eliminating thermal contact resistance typical of wire thermocouples. Film geometry and cross-sectional area dictate thermoelectric response stability under harsh environmental exposure.
Standard combination choices include Type K or platinum-based noble metal pairs depending on oxidation resistance requirements. Substrate preparation and surface roughness govern film continuity, as micro-cracks in thin legs increase total loop resistance and introduce signal noise.
Diffusion Degradation
Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures drives atomic interdiffusion across the overlapping junction region. Interdiffusion alters local thermoelement composition, degrading the effective Seebeck coefficient over operational lifespans. Baseline drift requires periodic recalibration or scheduled sensor replacement.
Metrological Calibration
Calibration procedures evaluate thermoelectric output against reference standard thermocouples inside calibrated tube furnaces. Automated test stands record output voltage across static temperature steps to generate polynomial Seebeck curves. Standardized calibration protocols specify tolerance bands for thermoelectric voltage outputs according to ASTM E230 standards.
Measurement uncertainty estimates incorporate cold junction compensation accuracy and thermal gradient errors across lead wire connections.
