Protective Housing
Protective enclosure designed to shield a sensitive resistive element from chemical or mechanical damage while allowing for accurate measurements. Effective strain gauge packaging must provide environmental isolation without impeding the transfer of mechanical loads from the host structure. This housing often consists of a thin metal foil or a polymer film that covers the delicate grid.
The choice of material depends on the temperature range and the presence of corrosive fluids.
Load Transmission
Integrity of the measurement depends on the ability of the package to stay perfectly bonded to the surface being measured. In strain gauge packaging, any internal movement or delamination will result in an incorrect reading of the structural stress. The packaging must be flexible enough to follow the deformation of the part but rigid enough to protect the internal wires.
High-performance units use laser-welded seals to provide a hermetic barrier for underwater or high-pressure use.
Environmental Barrier
Exposure to salt spray, oil or industrial solvents can quickly destroy an unprotected sensing element. Advanced strain gauge packaging uses specialized coatings to prevent the ingress of water and chemicals that would cause corrosion. This protection is essential for sensors mounted on the exterior of aircraft or in the middle of offshore oil platforms.
The barrier must remain intact over thousands of cycles of mechanical loading.
Sensor Integration
Mounting the device requires a clear understanding of how the package interacts with the adhesive and the host material. Improper installation of the strain gauge packaging can introduce unwanted stiffness or damping into the system. Technicians use precision alignment tools to ensure the sensor is oriented correctly with the axis of the strain.
Reliability of the installation is verified by checking the resistance and insulation of the gauge after the final seal is applied.
