Protocol Rule
System management communication standards enforce a strict timing constraint on clock signal inactivity to resolve frozen buses. A mechanism known as SMBus timeout requires that any device on the bus reset its communication interface if the clock line remains low for too long. This feature prevents a malfunctioning peripheral from permanently blocking the system.
The specific limit is typically between twenty-five and thirty-five milliseconds.
Hardware Action
Transceiver circuits monitor the duration of the low state using a dedicated internal counter. When the SMBus timeout threshold is exceeded, the internal logic of the sensor releases the line. This release allows the line to return to the high state through the pull-up resistors.
System Restoration
Communication recovery happens without a full power cycle of the system board. Because the line has been freed, the master controller can immediately resume communication with other functional sensors. This behavior is essential for maintaining high system availability in complex multi-sensor arrays.
Validation Test
Digital analyzers and pattern generators are used to verify compliance by injecting artificial delays into the communication sequence. Lab testing confirms that the sensor releases the lines within the window specified by the SMBus standard. This test is run across the operational temperature range to ensure the internal timing circuit does not drift out of compliance.
