Timing Allocation
High speed digital systems must manage the total time it takes for a signal to transition from a low state to a high state across all components. The rise time budget is the sum of the transition times contributed by the driver, the transmission line and the receiver. If the total rise time exceeds the bit period, the data cannot be recovered reliably.
Path Analysis
Calculation of the rise time budget begins with the inherent switching speed of the semiconductor device. Connectors and cables act as low pass filters that slow down the edges of the pulse. Each interface in the signal path must be accounted for to ensure the final transition is fast enough for the clock rate.
Performance Constraint
Exceeding the rise time budget leads to intersymbol interference where the energy from one bit spills into the next. This effect closes the eye diagram and increases the probability of data errors. Designers use high bandwidth components and low loss materials to preserve the sharpness of the signal edges.
Simulation tools help in predicting the cumulative rise time before the physical hardware is built.
System Design
An accurate rise time budget is a prerequisite for the successful implementation of multi gigabit serial links.
