Ingress Classification
Standardized environmental protection levels define the resistance of electrical enclosures to dust and water. The ip67 rating specifies that an enclosure is dust-tight and can withstand temporary immersion in water under defined conditions. This classification is widely used for industrial sensors and outdoor electronics.
It does not guarantee protection against high-pressure water jets.
Dust Testing
Enclosures are placed in a dust chamber with circulating powder to verify complete protection against solid particles. To achieve the ip67 rating, no dust may penetrate the housing during the multi-hour test cycle. The test often utilizes a vacuum to simulate pressure changes inside the housing.
This confirms that the seals can block even the finest particulates.
Immersion Testing
The device is submerged in water at a depth of one meter for thirty minutes to verify water resistance. Achieving the ip67 rating means that any water ingress during this test is limited to quantities that do not harm the internal electronics. This test is conducted in still water under controlled temperature conditions to ensure repeatability.
The results must be documented in a certified report.
Enclosure Application
This specification is common for equipment deployed in wet or dusty outdoor environments. It ensures standard reliability.
