Barrier Interface
An impermeable barrier formed by bonding molten glass to metallic pins and an outer housing prevents gaseous exchange in sensitive electronic enclosures. A hermetic glass to metal seal protects delicate sensor elements from atmospheric moisture.
Expansion Match
Mismatched coefficients of thermal expansion between the materials can induce mechanical failure during temperature cycling. To prevent this, the hermetic glass to metal seal utilizes alloy pins, such as Kovar, whose thermal properties align closely with those of borosilicate glass. This matching prevents cracks from forming during the cooling phase of the manufacturing process, which stabilizes the geometry of the pin layout.
Integrity Verification
Leakage testing ensures that the seal maintains its barrier performance under differential pressure. The helium mass spectrometer leak detector is the standard instrument used to quantify the leak rate. A maximum permissible helium leak rate of ten to the power of minus nine millibar liters per second is a common threshold for harsh-environment sensors.
Traceable Certification
Compliance certificates verify both the leak rate and the dielectric strength of the isolating material. Because contamination or surface oxidation on the metal shell can compromise the bond, the component undergoes visual and electrical checks. High-potential testing guarantees that the insulation resistance remains within acceptable limits.
