Calibration Source
Portable temperature calibrators utilise electronically controlled metal blocks with drilled insert bores to establish stable thermal environments for thermometer testing. Solid metal sleeves replace liquid calibration media, eliminating fluid vapour risks and bath fluid viscosity constraints across broad temperature spans. A dry block calibrator provides the reference medium for field verification of resistance temperature detectors, thermocouples, and bimetallic dial switches.
The instrument ceases to qualify as a primary standard when radial and axial heat leakage causes internal cavity gradients to exceed primary fixed point tolerances.
Thermal Core
Internal multi zone electric resistance elements heat or cool a removable metallic sleeve fabricated from brass, aluminium, or bronze alloys. Microprocessor based proportional integral derivative controllers monitor internal reference sensors to stabilise insert core temperatures. Test sensors slide directly into precision drilled insert bores that mirror sensor sheath diameters to minimize air gaps.
Axial heat loss from upper block surfaces produces vertical gradients, while asymmetrical insert drilling produces radial disparities. Dual zone heating designs counter end losses, maintaining uniform temperatures across lower working zones.
Metrological Verification
Laboratory qualification requires direct characterisation of axial gradients, well to well radial uniformity, stability over time, and stem conduction errors. Certified reference platinum resistance thermometers measure cavity temperatures while identical check standards monitor opposing bore channels. Stability measurements record drift rates over thirty minute evaluation windows after control equilibrium is reached.
Calibrator test specifications dictate rigorous insertion depth ratios to limit ambient thermal influence along probe sheaths. Block calibration fails when insert clearance allows air convective loops to dominate conductive heat transfer.
Field Deployment
Process plants install these calibrators on production floors to verify safety critical temperature loops without dismantling plant wiring. Insert adapter sleeves accommodate divergent industrial sensor geometries during high throughput verification campaigns. Transport shocks alter internal insulation alignment and loosen control sensor attachments, degrading temperature field uniformity over time.
Routine recalibration on reference calibration benches verifies that internal block gradients remain within documented uncertainty budgets.
