Package Form
A surface mount microelectronic housing features ten flat lead pads exposed on the bottom of a plastic body. This dfn-10 package has no protruding leads, which reduces its overall physical footprint and improves its electrical performance. The compact design allows for high density component placement on printed circuit boards.
It is commonly selected for small sensors and power management integrated circuits.
Thermal Dissipation
An exposed thermal pad on the underside of the plastic body provides a low resistance path to conduct heat away from the internal silicon die. Designers solder this pad to a copper plane on the circuit board to maintain low junction temperatures. Inadequate solder coverage beneath this pad can lead to thermal runaway.
Assembly Inspection
Manual visual inspection of the completed solder joints is challenging because the connections are hidden beneath the package body. Automated optical systems can check the small side fillets, but x-ray imaging is often required to verify the presence of solder voids. Consistent paste deposition is necessary to avoid bridging between the closely spaced pads.
Controlling the reflow profile minimizes the risk of package tilting during assembly.
Mechanical Stability
The low profile of the package reduces its susceptibility to vibration and mechanical shock. Board deflection can still induce stress on the solder joints, requiring careful placement away from high strain zones. Proper board layout prevents joint cracking under thermal cycling.
