Statistical Measure
Process performance metrics evaluate how closely a manufacturing line adheres to specified tolerance limits. The cpk capability index compares the spread of a process against the distance from the process mean to the nearest specification limit. It provides a numerical representation of the likelihood of producing defective units.
This metric only applies when the process output is normally distributed.
Calculation Method
The evaluation utilizes the mean, standard deviation, and upper or lower specification limits of the manufactured component. To calculate the cpk capability index, the smaller of the differences between the mean and the limits is divided by three standard deviations. This value indicates if the process is centered.
A value below one means the process generates defects.
Industrial Threshold
Manufacturing facilities require specific baseline values to approve a production line for commercial volume runs. For high-precision electronic assemblies, a cpk capability index of at least one point thirty-three is typically mandatory. Higher values signify that the process can withstand typical equipment wear and material variations without failing.
Quality control departments verify this during pre-production runs.
Process Stability
Frequent sampling ensures that drift is captured early before components exceed the tolerances. This tracking helps control long-term drift.
