Circuit Integration
Electrical networks configured as wheatstone bridges require specific resistance configurations to measure tiny changes in strain. A bridge completion module provides the missing resistors necessary to convert a quarter bridge or half bridge sensor into a fully active four-arm circuit. This conversion enables the conditioning electronics to detect sub-millivolt changes with high sensitivity.
Resistance Matching
Precision measurement demands that completion resistors match the nominal resistance of the active strain gauge. High precision metal foil resistors with tolerances of 0.01 percent or better are used within the module. Any mismatch in these resistance values introduces a zero offset that must be compensated before measurements begin.
Thermal Compensation
Environmental temperature changes cause resistance fluctuations that introduce errors into the sensor readings. This component is designed with a low temperature coefficient of resistance to match the thermal expansion of the substrate. This matching ensures the bridge balance remains stable across the entire operating temperature range.
Installation Effect
Mounting completion circuitry close to the strain gauge reduces electrical noise and lead wire resistance errors. Long cables between the active gauge and the module can introduce resistance that diminishes sensitivity and increases susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. Proper shielding and twisted pair wiring mitigate these effects, ensuring the integrity of the collected strain data.
Securing these modules in a temperature controlled housing further isolates them from external thermal drafts and physical vibrations that could disturb the balance of the sensitive Wheatstone bridge.
