Standard Scope
Standardized methods for stress relaxation tests of materials and structures provide a framework for evaluating time-dependent loss of force under constant strain. Use of astm e328 allows for the measurement of how internal stresses diminish in metals or plastics held at a fixed deformation. The scope excludes creep testing where the load is constant.
Stress Relaxation
Thermal environments accelerate the rate at which atoms rearrange or polymer chains slide. Within the provisions of astm e328, temperature control remains a primary requirement for data validity. Fluctuations in ambient conditions can introduce thermal expansion errors that mask the underlying relaxation behavior.
Testing Method
Loading procedures require the application of a specific initial strain before the recording phase begins. Testing following astm e328 specifies that the initial load must be reached without overshoot to prevent work hardening or premature yielding. Sensors must capture the force decay continuously to establish a curve that describes the long-term stability of the mechanical assembly.
Precision load cells and extensometers are calibrated to ensure the resolution of small force changes.
Result Interpretation
Mathematical models typically extrapolate the data gathered over hundreds of hours to predict performance over several years. Verification of astm e328 compliance involves checking that the test duration and sampling frequency meet the needs of the final application. Reliability of the final assembly depends on these relaxation rates.
