Structural Composition
Ceramic platforms designed for microelectronic packaging must provide high thermal conductivity alongside electrical resistivity. The aluminum nitride substrate satisfies these requirements through a crystalline lattice that allows phonon-assisted heat transport. This material features a hexagonal wurtzite structure which minimizes lattice defects that otherwise impede thermal transfer.
High-purity powder is sintered at elevated temperatures to form a dense monolithic plate.
Thermal Performance
Heat dissipation in high-power semiconductor assemblies depends on the rate of thermal conduction through the mounting medium. Choosing an aluminum nitride substrate provides a thermal conductivity exceeding one hundred and eighty watts per meter-kelvin. This rate is far superior to alumina and closely matches the thermal expansion coefficient of silicon.
Such thermal matching prevents mechanical stress at solder joints during cyclic power fluctuations. In practice, the addition of oxygen impurities can degrade this conductivity by creating aluminum vacancies in the lattice, meaning that raw materials must be monitored to ensure oxygen levels remain below zero point one percent.
Electrical Isolation
Dielectric strength dictates the maximum voltage a barrier can withstand before breakdown occurs. In a typical packaging configuration, the aluminum nitride substrate displays a dielectric strength greater than fifteen kilovolts per millimeter. The low dielectric constant and dissipation factor across high frequencies minimize signal loss.
These characteristics prevent leakage currents in high-frequency applications.
Industrial Standard
Quality verification requires compliance with specific dimensional tolerances and surface finishes. A standard aluminum nitride substrate undergoes lapping or polishing to achieve a surface roughness below zero point one micrometers. Physical dimensions and camber are verified using non-contact optical profilometry before shipment.
Manufacturers certify these parameters to ensure consistent metallization during circuit deposition.
