Signal Reconstruction
Digital control systems use this hold to maintain a constant output value between discrete sample times. A zero order hold samples the incoming signal and keeps the magnitude fixed until the next interval arrives. It acts as a reconstruction filter that converts a sequence of impulses into a stepped waveform.
This function introduces a delay equal to half the sample period and creates high frequency artifacts in the spectrum.
Quantization Error
The difference between the original continuous signal and the stepped output defines the reconstruction error. A higher sampling frequency reduces the gap between the steps and improves the fidelity of the converted signal. Spectral distortion appears as a sinc function attenuation, which limits the usable bandwidth of the output.
Engineers compensate for this amplitude droop by applying a digital filter before the conversion process.
Systemic Influence
Clock jitter alters the timing of the holds and adds noise to the output voltage. Any uncertainty in the duration of the hold period shifts the phase response of the system. Precise triggers ensure the hold duration aligns with the master oscillator to minimize harmonic distortion.
Load variations at the output stage can also cause droop if the current demand exceeds the drive capability of the holding circuit.
Calibration Metric
Accuracy checks focus on the sag of the voltage level during the hold phase. An ideal switch maintains the potential indefinitely, but leakage currents cause a slow decay in the output. Technicians measure the voltage stability during the full sample window to confirm performance against the datasheet specifications.
The droop rate provides a direct measure of the leakage current and the capacitance of the storage element.
