Component Protection
Synthetic rubber compounds encapsulate electronic assemblies to provide insulation and mechanical support within a protective housing. The potting elastomer provides a barrier to isolate sensitive parts from moisture and physical shock. It fills the voids around the components to create a monolithic block.
Material Property
Low viscosity during application allows the liquid to flow into narrow gaps before it solidifies into a flexible solid. This property ensures that no air pockets remain that could cause electrical arcing or poor heat dissipation. The hardness of the final material is measured on the Shore scale.
Thermal Management
Heat generated by the electronics must pass through the material to reach the outer casing where it can be dissipated. Additives such as ceramic powders improve the thermal conductivity of the polymer without compromising its electrical insulation. Because the material expands when heated, the coefficient of thermal expansion must be low enough to avoid damaging the components.
Mismatched expansion rates can pull solder joints away from the circuit board. Choosing the correct elastomer involves balancing the need for mechanical damping with the requirements for heat transfer.
Reliability Standard
Accelerated aging tests verify that the material does not become brittle or lose its dielectric strength over the life of the product. High humidity testing ensures the seal remains intact.
