Integrated Solution
Single chip solution that combines digital processing with analog peripherals on a single silicon die. Designers utilize a mixed-signal microcontroller to interface directly with physical sensors without needing external operational amplifiers or conversion chips. Internal components often include analog to digital converters, digital to analog converters, voltage comparators and signal mixers.
Combining these functions reduces the total board space and system cost.
Analog Capability
High precision converters allow the device to resolve small voltage changes from transducers. Processing these signals inside the mixed-signal microcontroller requires dedicated hardware timers and interrupt controllers for real time response. Dynamic range is limited by the internal noise floor and reference stability.
Signal Isolation
Isolating the sensitive analog circuits from the high speed digital noise is a primary challenge in the design of a mixed-signal microcontroller. Separate power and ground pins help minimize the coupling of switching transients into the measurement signal. Careful layout techniques are required to maintain high signal integrity.
Firmware Control
Software running on the mixed-signal microcontroller can dynamically reconfigure the internal routing of analog signals to suit different operational modes. Automated calibration routines improve the accuracy of the internal peripherals by compensating for temperature changes. Low power modes allow the device to monitor analog inputs while the main processor sleeps.
