Testing Interface
Hardware assemblies that act as the mechanical and electrical bridge between a wafer prober and the integrated circuits being tested. A mems probe card utilizes micro-electromechanical systems technology to create thousands of tiny, spring-like contactors that align perfectly with the pads of a silicon wafer. These components are essential for testing high-density chips where traditional needle-based technology cannot meet the pitch requirements.
Contact Force
Precision lithography allows for the fabrication of probe tips with micron-level accuracy. The springs in a mems probe card are designed to provide a consistent force across the entire wafer surface to ensure low contact resistance. This uniformity is necessary for simultaneous testing of hundreds of chips, as it prevents excessive wear on the contact pads while maintaining a reliable electrical connection.
Signal Integrity
Short electrical paths within the micro-machined structures minimize parasitic inductance during high-speed signal transmission.
Operating Environment
Working at extreme temperatures requires materials with a low coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent the tips from drifting out of alignment. Calibration routines check the planarity of the mems probe card to ensure that every tip touches the wafer at the same time. Stable performance across a wide temperature range allows for more accurate characterization of the chip behavior under realistic field conditions.
