Cavity Shielding
Microelectromechanical systems encapsulation provides a hermetic or controlled internal atmosphere that protects delicate mechanical structures from environmental moisture, particulate contamination and chemical degradation. Vacuum level maintenance inside the sealed cavity prevents viscous damping of the moving proof mass, directly preserving resonant frequency stability and mechanical quality factor. Hermeticity failure allows ambient water vapor adsorption onto the microscopic silicon surfaces, causing stiction between opposing electrostatic comb drives during operation.
Accelerated testing regimes quantify moisture ingress rates using helium fine leak detectors, comparing measured atomic mass spectrometer readings against absolute threshold limits established by military and industrial standards.
Bond Integrity
Glass frit sealing, anodic bonding and solder eutectic techniques form the mechanical interface joining the microfabricated device wafer to the corresponding cap substrate. Shear strength tests determine whether the interfacial joint withstands thermal shock cycles without inducing residual stresses that warp the underlying silicon membrane. Residual gas analysis verifies that organic outgassing from polymer adhesives does not poison the internal getter material during high-temperature activation cycles.
Stress Management
Coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the silicon die and the glass or ceramic packaging housing introduces mechanical strain that alters sensor zero-g offset values. Finite element modeling calculates stress distributions across the sealing ring, predicting piezoresistive shifts in the Wheatstone bridge circuitry located near the perimeter of the active sensing area. Wafer level packaging mitigates these packaging-induced offsets by matching the thermal expansion characteristics of the cap material to the single-crystal silicon substrate.
Signal Feedthrough
Conductive paths passing through the hermetic barrier transmit electrical excitation and output signals from the interior cavity to external printed circuit boards without compromising vacuum integrity. Glass-to-metal seals and doped silicon vias introduce parasitic capacitance that limits the frequency bandwidth of capacitive readout circuits connected to the transducer. Electrical resistance measurements across the feedthrough verify ohmic contact stability while high-potential dielectric breakdown tests ensure isolation between adjacent interconnect channels under maximum operating voltage conditions.
