Quality Competence
Formal accreditation that demonstrates the technical competence and impartiality of testing and calibration laboratories operates through an internationally recognized management system. For sensor testing facilities, ISO IEC 17025 compliance requires the implementation of validated methods and the estimation of measurement uncertainty for all calibration activities. This standard binds laboratories to rigorous standards of data integrity and traceability.
It does not apply to laboratories that perform only R&D testing without commercial or regulatory reporting.
Technical Traceability
Establishing an unbroken chain of calibrations to national or international standards is a core requirement of the standard. Achieving ISO IEC 17025 compliance requires laboratories to use reference standards that are calibrated by national metrology institutes. This ensures that the measurements made by the accredited laboratory can be compared to measurements made anywhere in the world.
The laboratory must maintain documented procedures for each calibration step.
Audit Assessment
External audits are conducted regularly by accreditation bodies to verify that the laboratory’s procedures are followed in practice. These audits include witnessing calibrations and reviewing uncertainty budgets. If any non-conformities are found, the laboratory must implement corrective actions within a specified timeframe.
This oversight maintains the credibility of the accreditation.
Operational Benefit
Accredited calibration certificates are widely accepted by industrial customers, reducing the need for redundant testing of incoming sensors. This acceptance facilitates international trade by ensuring that measurements made in one country are recognized in another. Sensors calibrated by a compliant laboratory are trusted by safety-critical industries.
