Electrical Connection
Conductive paths within a semiconductor device facilitate the restoration of internal registers and state machines to a known initial condition. Stable integrated circuit reset lines prevent the system from entering indeterminate logic states during power transitions.
Signal Integrity
Trace routing for these components requires consideration of impedance and noise immunity to avoid spurious triggering from adjacent high speed data buses. Proper integrated circuit reset lines maintain a stable voltage level above the threshold specified in the manufacturer data sheet.
Timing Tolerance
The duration of the low pulse must exceed the minimum setup time of the internal flip flops to ensure a complete transition. Because integrated circuit reset lines often share a common ground plane, the return path must be sized to handle transient current spikes without causing ground bounce. A delay circuit often filters out high frequency glitches that might otherwise cause an unintended restart.
This prevents noise.
Verification Requirement
Production testing involves measuring the propagation delay from the assertion of the signal to the first valid instruction fetch on the output bus. Measurements of integrated circuit reset lines are qualified by checking the transition slope at the input pins under worst case temperature and voltage conditions.
