Packaging Logic
A thermal process joins two substrates using a specialized low-melting-point mineral layer. Engineers use glass frit sealing to create a vacuum-tight enclosure around sensitive moving parts. The material acts as both a mechanical bond and an electrical insulator between the header and the cap.
Thermal Bonding
Fusing the glass requires a controlled ramp of heat until the powder transforms into a solid glass bead. The success of glass frit sealing relies on the alignment of the expansion coefficients between the glass and the silicon frame. Incorrect temperature ramps lead to high residual strain that can bias the sensor output.
Hermetic Verification
Leak testing is done with helium to confirm the seal is truly airless. When glass frit sealing is performed poorly, micro-channels form that let gas into the cavity over several months. This breach kills the resonance of the sensor by increasing the internal air friction.
Stress Impact
Stiff bonds transmit package-level forces directly into the sensing element. Because glass frit sealing creates such a rigid connection, it is often isolated using stress-relief patterns in the sensor design. Quality is verified at the end of the line by looking for uniform color in the seal ring.
