Detection Principles
Electromagnetic induction creates opposing currents within conductive materials when an alternating magnetic field proximity exists. This eddy current sensing monitors subsurface discontinuities by measuring phase shifts or amplitude variations in the secondary field induced by the target. Variations in material conductivity or magnetic permeability modify the impedance of the probe coil during operation.
Operational Performance
Proximity sensors function best when the object remains stable relative to the coil axis throughout the measurement cycle. Mechanical vibrations induce spurious signals that mask the desired output if the fixture lacks adequate dampening. Signal processors filter frequency components to separate distance data from noise generated by thermal expansion in the metallic housing.
Calibration against a known reference block ensures linearity across the working range.
Environmental Sensitivity
Temperature changes alter the resistance of the sensing coil and the resistivity of the target material simultaneously. Electronic compensation circuitry corrects for drift by comparing the active probe output with a shielded reference coil situated in an identical thermal environment. Humidity remains a secondary factor if the encapsulation material prevents moisture ingress into the winding assembly.
Electromagnetic interference from nearby high-frequency equipment adds noise that demands differential signal processing for accurate resolution.
Measurement Integrity
Certified probes define the spatial resolution by the diameter of the coil and the excitation frequency. Tolerances established by international standards set the boundaries for acceptable nonlinearity and hysteresis in industrial deployments. Field measurements require rigorous attention to lift-off effects where the distance between the probe and the conductor varies beyond the specified operating gap.
Proper shielding remains the single requirement to ensure that the probe detects the target instead of surrounding structural components.
