Handling Format
Continuous strip of material with embossed pockets used for the transport of surface mount components. Automated assembly lines rely on carrier tape to deliver parts to the pick and place machine at high speeds. The physical dimensions of the tape are standardized to ensure compatibility with feeder mechanisms.
Pocket Dimension
Cavities are designed to hold the components securely while allowing for easy removal by a vacuum nozzle. The carrier tape must have precise spacing between the pockets to maintain the timing of the production line. If the pockets are too large, the components may rotate and cause an alignment failure.
Shielding Layer
Conductive or dissipative polymers protect sensitive electronics from electrostatic discharge. The carrier tape often includes a cover film that is peeled back just before the part is picked. This combination of materials keeps the components clean and prevents them from falling out during shipping.
Feed Rate
Sprocket holes along the edge of the strip allow the feeder to advance the tape with high accuracy. The carrier tape must be strong enough to withstand the tension of the winding and unwinding process. Consistent tension is required to prevent the tape from snapping or jamming in the machine.
This packaging solution enables the high-volume manufacturing of complex electronic assemblies.
