Mass Transfer
Calculation of the speed at which moisture molecules migrate through a solid polymer wall or barrier layer. Determining the vapor permeation rate allows engineers to estimate how long internal desiccants will last before becoming saturated. This transfer occurs as a sequence of adsorption, diffusion through the material and desorption into the inner cavity.
Material Comparison
Relative humidity levels drive the vapor permeation rate, with high gradients accelerating the transport across the membrane. Plastics exhibit much higher rates than metals or glass, which act as nearly perfect barriers to water.
Measurement Factor
Quantification is performed under standardized conditions of temperature and humidity, using grams per square meter per day as common units. Permeability is not constant but rises as temperatures increase because the gaps between polymer chains expand. Effective enclosure design targets materials with values low enough to maintain humidity below the threshold where corrosion starts inside.
Long-term reliability is calculated by summing the total moisture ingress over the expected ten-year service life.
Verification Threshold
Testing involves weighing a sealed container filled with moisture-absorbing materials and monitoring its mass gain over weeks. Laboratory reports confirm that these values align with the target safety specifications for the electronics inside.
