Simulation Instrument
Specialized laboratory platforms simulate the harsh environments of space while applying controlled rotational motion to sensor payloads. A thermal vacuum rate table provides this dual environment by housing a high precision rotary axis inside a vacuum chamber equipped with thermal plates. This instrument allows aerospace engineers to calibrate and qualify satellite guidance gyroscopes under realistic flight conditions.
Thermal Control
Temperature regulation across a broad range is achieved using liquid nitrogen cooling and resistive heating elements built into the surrounding shrouds and the rotating platter itself. Thermal transfer in a vacuum relies entirely on radiation and conduction through the table surface, which requires careful control of mount interfaces. The sensor must be brought to thermal equilibrium at each test temperature before rotation tests begin to prevent thermal gradients from distorting the calibration data.
Motion Profile
Rotational testing applies precise angular velocities and accelerations while the chamber environment is cycled. Slip rings and fiber optic rotary joints transmit sensor telemetry out of the vacuum chamber to recording equipment without creating mechanical drag or restricting rotation. This permits continuous multi turn calibration sequences.
Verification Standard
System accuracy is verified against optical encoders and atomic clocks that monitor the angular position of the platter in real time. Lab audits measure the wobble and speed stability of the axis under full thermal load to ensure that the test environment does not introduce extraneous acceleration. This rigorous characterization is required to trace sensor calibration back to national metrology standards.
