Permanent Storage
Non-volatile memory arrays store configurations or calibration values that cannot be altered after programming. Microchip designs incorporate OTP fuses to hold unique device identifiers and factory-set trim parameters.
Sensor Calibration
Silicon wafer test systems run precise electrical routines to determine the deviation of each sensor element from the nominal target. After calculating the necessary corrections, the system programs these values into the OTP fuses of the device. This action permanently locks the calibration coefficients to ensure stable sensor readings.
Security Configuration
Firmware protection routines require secure storage of encryption keys and boot settings to prevent unauthorized access. By configuring specific OTP fuses, developers can disable debug interfaces such as JTAG and block further programming of the flash memory. This hardware-based lock prevents malicious entities from reading sensitive software or loading custom firmware onto the controller.
Once these fuses are blown, the change is irreversible, providing a secure layer of protection for devices deployed in unsecured field locations.
Quality Control
Automated test equipment verifies the status of programmed memory elements before shipping the final product to customers. Reading the OTP fuses ensures that the device has been correctly configured and calibrated during the manufacturing stage. This verification step prevents unprogrammed parts from entering the supply chain.
