Coil Geometry
Winding configurations for fiber optic coils that distribute the fiber in a specific, highly symmetric sequence of eight layers minimize the sensitivity of the sensor to thermal gradients. In high-accuracy navigation gyroscopes, the octupolar fiber spool ensures that symmetric segments of the fiber are positioned adjacent to each other to experience identical thermal environments. This arrangement reduces the non-reciprocal phase shifts that cause bias drift.
Thermal Equilibrium
Temperature changes that propagate through the coil create asymmetric phase shifts if they affect one direction of light propagation before the other. By placing fiber segments of equal distance from the coil center close together, the geometric layout of this spool ensures that temperature changes affect both beams simultaneously. The optical interference pattern remains stable, preventing false rotation readings.
Manufacturing Accuracy
Winding precision is critical because any deviation from the prescribed pattern degrades the thermal balance of the coil. Automated winding machines utilize precision tension controllers to prevent micro-bends and fiber strain during assembly. Qualification of the completed coil involves thermal cycling tests while measuring the output drift on a stable test stand.
Mechanical Protection
The physical spool must be enclosed in a thermally insulating and magnetically shielding housing to maintain its performance.
