Insulation Medium
Ceramic powder packing within a metallic sensor sheath provides electrical insulation while permitting heat transfer to the internal elements. This material application, referred to as magnesium oxide potting, isolates the sensor wires from each other and from the protective outer sheath. It is packed tightly to avoid voids.
Thermal Conduction
Dense compaction of the powder maximizes its ability to conduct thermal energy. Although magnesium oxide is an electrical insulator, its crystalline structure allows it to transfer heat relatively quickly compared to air or other ceramic insulators. This improves the response speed of the temperature sensor.
Structural Protection
Mechanical stability of the delicate sensor wires increases through this solid packing. The compacted magnesium oxide potting holds the internal assembly firmly in place, protecting it from vibration and mechanical shock. This prevents the junction from breaking.
Moisture Sensitivity
Environmental sealing remains essential because the compacted powder absorbs water from the surrounding air. Ingress of moisture reduces the electrical insulation resistance, which causes measurement drift and sensor failure. Sealing the open ends of the sensor sheath with epoxy or glass during manufacturing prevents this degradation from occurring in the field.
This measure ensures that the high dielectric strength of the compacted powder is maintained throughout the lifetime of the sensor.
