Package Geometry
A leadless ceramic chip carrier package featuring eight contact pads arranged along its perimeter. In high-reliability electronics, the lcc-8 protects sensitive analog references from mechanical stress. This hermetically sealed enclosure is designed for surface-mount assembly.
Mechanical Mounting
The lack of metal leads reduces the parasitic inductance and capacitance of the connections, improving high-frequency performance. In the lcc-8 package, metalized pads on the underside are soldered directly to corresponding printed circuit board lands, which creates a low-profile assembly. This rigid solder connection also minimizes the physical movement of the die relative to the board, which is essential for maintaining precision in high-vibration applications.
Thermal Expansion
Matching the coefficient of thermal expansion of the board to that of the ceramic body is critical to prevent solder joint fatigue. When subjected to rapid thermal cycles, the difference in contraction rates between FR4 boards and the alumina housing of the lcc-8 can stress the connections, leading to microscopic cracks. System designers resolve this vulnerability by utilizing specialized board materials or by specifying flexible mounting techniques.
Moisture Protection
Hermetic sealing with a metal or ceramic lid prevents moisture ingress into the cavity of the device. This protection prevents the oxidation of delicate wire bonds and corrosion of the active sensor surfaces, extending the operating lifetime in harsh environments. Because of this high level of environmental isolation, the lcc-8 remains a preferred format for military and aerospace sensor deployments.
