Tensile Methodology
Non resonant tensile vibration acts as a primary mode for evaluating the viscoelastic properties of rigid plastics. Adherence to iso 6721 4 permits the measurement of complex modulus components over a continuous range of frequencies and temperatures. The scope covers materials that are sufficiently stiff to resist buckling under the applied sinusoidal load.
Dynamic Loading
Sinusoidal displacement is applied to a rectangular or cylindrical test specimen to determine the phase lag between stress and strain. Within the framework of iso 6721 4, the amplitude of the deformation must remain within the linear viscoelastic region of the plastic. This ensures that the storage and loss moduli are independent of the strain magnitude.
Instrument Calibration
Force and displacement transducers require verification against traceable references to ensure the accuracy of the reported damping values. During an iso 6721 4 test, the thermal chamber must maintain a uniform temperature distribution to prevent local variations in material stiffness. Errors in the grip alignment or slippage of the specimen lead to large underestimation of the modulus.
The signal processing hardware must filter out electronic noise that could be mistaken for mechanical damping.
Data Reporting
Results are typically presented as a function of temperature at a fixed frequency. The iso 6721 4 documentation requires the inclusion of the specimen dimensions and the specific clamping pressure used.
