Magnetic Suppression Component
Passive electronic elements made of ceramic magnetic materials attenuate high frequency electromagnetic interference on signal and power cables. By clamping a ferrite core shielding sleeve around a conductor, engineers increase the local impedance for unwanted noise without affecting the desired low frequency signals. The material converts high frequency energy into small amounts of heat.
Impedance Increase
Permeability of the ferrite material concentrates the magnetic field generated by the current in the wire. This concentration creates a series inductance that blocks fast electrical transients. Effectiveness depends on the chemical composition of the ferrite and the number of turns the wire makes through the core.
Interference Absorption
Differential mode noise and common mode noise are both reduced by the presence of the magnetic material. Ferrites are particularly effective at suppressing radio frequency interference from switching power supplies and digital clocks. They provide a simple solution for meeting electromagnetic compatibility requirements during the final stages of product integration.
Installation Geometry
Placement of the component as close as possible to the entry point of the enclosure maximizes its effectiveness. Gaps in a split core design reduce the total inductance and decrease the suppression performance. Choosing the correct inner diameter ensures a tight fit that prevents the core from sliding along the cable.
