Assurance Protocol
Systematic testing and analysis of electronic parts to confirm they meet the specific radiation tolerance requirements of a given mission. Successful radiation qualification provides the evidence needed to clear a component for use in environments where it will encounter protons and heavy ions. This process includes both lot-specific testing and the evaluation of historical data.
Test Plan
Engineering teams define the energy levels, dose rates, bias states and temperature conditions for the exposure before the campaign begins. A thorough radiation qualification addresses various failure modes, such as latch-up, dielectric breakdown, burnout or gradual parameter drift. These plans often follow international standards like those from the European Space Agency or the United States military.
Lot Sampling
Statistical validity requires that the tested units represent the entire production batch. If the radiation qualification identifies a failure in a subset of the parts, the entire lot may be deemed unsuitable for the flight. This strict adherence to sampling prevents a single weak component from compromising an entire satellite.
Documentation Record
Final reports summarize the findings and establish the safe operating limits for the system designers. This archive of radiation qualification data allows future projects to reuse components with a known performance history.
