Dehumidification Process
Controlled heating of moisture-sensitive electronic components drives out absorbed water vapor from plastic packages prior to dry packing. The moisture barrier bag bake process prevents internal delamination and micro-cracking during the rapid heating of the reflow oven. Components that have exceeded their allowable out-of-bag floor life must undergo this thermal treatment before they can be safely sealed in protective pouches.
Thermal Threshold
Oven parameters are governed by the moisture sensitivity level of the device and the thickness of the plastic package. Low-temperature cycles of forty degrees Celsius with low relative humidity are applied to devices on tape and reel to avoid damaging the carrier tape. When trays or tubes are used, a moisture barrier bag bake can run at one hundred and twenty-five degrees Celsius to achieve rapid desorption.
Packaging Requirement
Once the drying cycle finishes, the components are immediately sealed in multilayer protective envelopes along with a desiccant card. Delaying the moisture barrier bag bake packaging step allows the dry components to reabsorb humidity from the surrounding factory air. The maximum allowable exposure time between oven removal and final heat sealing is limited to a few hours.
Verification Standard
Quality assurance teams inspect the humidity indicator cards enclosed with the dry-packed boards to verify the integrity of the seal during subsequent storage. Any change in the indicator dot color requires the components to be baked again.
