Crystal Sensitivity
Piezoresistive phenomena describe the modulation of electrical conductivity in a solid resulting from applied mechanical stress. Longitudinal piezoresistance occurs when the direction of the electrical current and the applied uniaxial strain align along the same crystallographic axis. Semiconductor materials exhibit this behavior due to changes in carrier mobility and effective mass under deformation.
Calibration of strain gauges relies on the gauge factor which quantifies this resistance change relative to mechanical displacement.
Stress Interaction
Sensors utilize this principle by aligning the sensing element with the primary axis of loading to maximize output. A bridge circuit detects the resulting voltage variance while thermal compensation loops minimize errors from ambient temperature fluctuations. Calibration protocols require verifying the linearity of the output over the full rated load capacity of the device.
Non-linear responses occur if the strain levels exceed the elastic limit of the material or if shear forces contaminate the longitudinal orientation.
Device Qualification
Precision instrumentation requires validation of the sensitivity coefficient across the operating temperature range defined by international calibration standards. Field verification involves applying a known reference mass or displacement to ensure the signal remains within defined tolerance bands. Drift manifests as a gradual shift in the baseline resistance value, frequently caused by adhesive creep or aging in the sensing layer.
Signal Integrity
Electromagnetic shielding preserves the accuracy of the measurement chain by preventing inductive interference from external sources. Differential amplification allows for the rejection of common mode noise that degrades the resolution of the piezoresistive signal. Robust connection techniques prevent contact resistance variability from introducing phantom readings at the junction points.
High frequency vibration requires dampening or digital filtering to prevent mechanical resonance from corrupting the intended longitudinal data set.
