Standardized Identifier
Multi-bit identifier compliant with the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council standards for identifying the manufacturer and the part identity of an integrated circuit. A jedec idcode allows automated test equipment and boundary scan tools to recognize the silicon hardware without manual configuration. It resides in a dedicated register accessible through the JTAG interface.
Data Structure
The code includes a continuation field that indicates the manufacturer, followed by a part identity and a version number. These bits are hardcoded into the silicon during the design phase. Software tools use this information to select the correct programming algorithms or to verify that the board contains the specified components.
Boundary Scan
During the board-level testing process, the idcode is the first piece of information shifted out of the scan chain. This confirms that the chip is powered correctly and that the serial communication path is functional. If the received code does not match the expected library entry, the test stops to prevent potential hardware damage.
Internal registers verify the integrity of the scan path during every power-up sequence.
Lifecycle Management
Distributors and system integrators use the version bits within the string to track hardware revisions. This ensures that firmware updates are only applied to compatible silicon stepping. The standardization of this identifier across different vendors simplifies the development of universal debugging tools.
