Standard Scope
International standards for fluid power systems establish the boundary dimensions, tolerances, and design criteria for elastomeric sealing rings. Adherence to iso 3601 ensures that elastomeric o-rings maintain proper compression and sealing force within specified industrial housings. The standard applies to o-rings used in both static and dynamic applications.
It defines the standardized codes for outer diameters and cross-sections.
Dimensional Tolerance
Class A and Class B tolerances dictate the allowable variation in o-ring dimensions. The stricter Class A tolerances are intended for industrial applications where seal integrity is paramount. These specifications prevent leaks by ensuring the seal fits perfectly into the machined groove.
Material Requirement
The standard specifies the surface quality grades for rubber seals, defining the maximum allowable sizes of defects such as flash, offsets, and flow marks. Quality acceptance levels are defined under grade designations N and S. Specifying a grade S seal requires a rigorous inspection process to ensure the absence of microscopic surface imperfections that could cause leaks under high pressure. This standardizes the production output for safety-critical systems.
Quality Verification
Compliance is verified through specialized measurement systems that use optical sensors to determine the diameter without contacting the flexible rubber. Traditional caliper measurements can compress the elastomer, yielding inaccurate readings. Non-contact optical systems measure the part under reference temperature conditions.
This ensures that the dimensions are accurate before the seal is installed in a high-pressure sensor manifold.
