Transduction Method
Non-contact spatial positioning measures relative target location through variations in an alternating electromagnetic field generated by a sensor coil. Sensing systems utilizing inductive displacement evaluate changes in winding impedance, resonance frequency or induced secondary voltages when an electrically conductive or ferromagnetic object enters the probe flux path. The measurement boundary ends at target distances where coil excitation fields decay below the operational signal-to-noise floor of the front-end demodulation circuit.
Impedance Modulation
High-frequency alternating currents flowing through the sensing coil establish a concentrated magnetic field that induces circulating eddy currents within conductive target surfaces. These secondary eddy currents establish an opposing magnetic field, reducing overall coil inductance while increasing effective coil series resistance. Demodulation electronics process this complex impedance change, converting target position into calibrated linear voltage or current outputs.
Ferromagnetic targets introduce a competing magnetic permeability effect that increases coil inductance at low frequencies, demanding proper carrier frequency optimization to isolate displacement from core material responses. Target thickness must exceed the electromagnetic skin depth of the active excitation frequency to prevent background interference from changing sensor impedance baselines. Temperature coefficients of target electrical conductivity cause significant output drift unless internal balance coils or digital compensation algorithms track environmental changes continuously.
Calibration Standard
Primary linear displacement calibration utilizes laser heterodyne interferometers traceable to national metrological wavelength standards. Fixtures position sensor tips perpendicular to test surfaces using multi-axis micrometer stages with sub-micron positioning resolution. Factory certificates record measurement sensitivity, linearity errors across defined measurement spans and target material correction factors.
Re-verification protocols document transducer output drift against reference gauge blocks under controlled ambient temperatures.
Integration Criterion
Mounting bore geometries must respect specified lateral clear zones to avoid parasitic electromagnetic coupling with surrounding metallic machine structures. Target surface area must meet minimum diameter requirements, typically three times probe coil diameter, to prevent edge-effect non-linearities from degrading reading fidelity. Cable capacitance changes alter oscillator tank frequencies, requiring dedicated matched-length cable assemblies between sensor heads and external conditioning modules.
Receiving inspection accepts sensor lots based on verified linearity within specified target stand-off ranges.
