Measurement Instrument
Precision impedance evaluation requires instruments that can isolate the properties of the device under test from the effects of the connection leads. A four wire lcr meter utilizes separate pairs of cables for current sourcing and voltage sensing to achieve high accuracy. This configuration ensures that no current flows through the voltage sensing leads, preventing voltage drops across them.
The instrument is capable of measuring inductance, capacitance and resistance across a wide range of frequencies.
Lead Elimination
Standard two-wire measurements suffer from errors caused by the resistance and inductance of the test leads themselves. When using a four wire lcr meter, the test current is supplied through one pair of leads, while the voltage is sensed through a separate pair. This separation effectively removes the lead resistance from the measurement equation, which is critical when measuring low-impedance components.
Consequently, sub-milliohm resistances can be measured with high repeatability.
Fixture Calibration
Calibration of the test fixture must be performed before taking measurements to eliminate residual parasitics. The procedure involves running open-circuit and short-circuit calibration routines at the tips of the test leads. This process establishes the baseline zero reference for both capacitance and inductance.
Accuracy Verification
Reference standards of known impedance are measured periodically to verify the accuracy of the instrument against the manufacturer’s specifications. These reference standards include highly stable resistors and capacitors with certificates traceable to national metrology institutes. The instrument’s measured values are compared with the certified values to determine if any drift has occurred over time.
If the drift exceeds the specified tolerance, the instrument must be sent to a certified laboratory for adjustment.
