Simulation Enclosure
Atmospheric simulation enclosures provide controlled environments for evaluating the ingress of solid particles into sealed electrical equipment. A category 1 dust chamber maintains a specific vacuum pressure within the device under test to simulate the pressure changes caused by thermal cycling. This enclosure operates according to standards such as IEC 60529 to ensure that enclosures used in mining or industrial settings prevent internal contamination.
Operational Pressure
Air is extracted from the component to create a vacuum. The category 1 dust chamber uses an extraction pump to create a pressure differential up to 2 kilopascals between the internal cavity of the component and the surrounding dust clouds. Fine talcum powder circulates at a concentration of 2 kilograms per cubic metre while the pump monitors air volume.
Media Specification
Particle size must be controlled to ensure the particle size remains within the boundaries required for a repeatable atmospheric simulation. Standardized talcum powder used inside the category 1 dust chamber must pass through a 75 micrometre wire mesh to ensure consistent results. This medium is replaced regularly.
Seal Integrity
Verification of results occurs by inspecting the internal surfaces of the housing for any sign of residue. A pass is recorded if no dust entered the category 1 dust chamber during the cycle.
