Communication Profile
Application layer protocols for controller area networks define the communication profile and device behavior for decentralized industrial systems. The canopen standard provides a method for addressing nodes and managing data exchange without requiring complex proprietary hardware. It organizes data into an object dictionary.
This structure allows different manufacturers to achieve interoperability.
Object Dictionary
The internal database of a device holds every parameter and real time variable in a standardized index. Users access these entries using service data objects for configuration. Process data objects handle the high speed transmission of sensor values.
Each entry has a unique sixteen bit index. This mapping ensures that a master controller recognizes a motor or pressure sensor regardless of the vendor.
Network Management
A state machine governs the operational status of every node on the bus. Commands transition devices from a pre-operational state to an operational state where data exchange begins. Heartbeat messages monitor the presence of nodes.
If a device stops responding, the system enters a fail safe mode. This mechanism protects hardware from damage during a communication failure.
Physical Implementation
Differential signaling on twisted pair cabling provides resistance to electromagnetic interference. Maximum cable lengths decrease as the bit rate increases. Termination resistors at each end of the bus prevent signal reflections.
