Analog Transmission Interface
Direct current signals convey process variables over long distances through a pair of wires. Within this framework, 4-20ma current loop technology provides a reliable method for connecting remote sensors to industrial control systems. The low end of the scale represents the minimum measured value.
High current levels signify the maximum range of the transmitter.
Power Delivery
Energy for the sensing device often comes directly from the signal wires themselves. This configuration allows a single cable pair to handle both communications and electrical supply. Loop power minimizes installation complexity by removing the need for local power sources at the measurement point.
Interference Resistance
Low impedance characteristics protect the signal from electromagnetic disturbances that affect voltage based measurements. Because the receiver measures current rather than potential difference, voltage drops along the cable do not degrade the accuracy of the reading. Current remains constant throughout the entire circuit regardless of the wire length or the resistance of the connections.
Twisted pair cabling further reduces the impact of external magnetic fields and radio frequency noise.
Diagnostics Check
Failure of a component or a break in the wire leads to a total loss of current. Because the zero point of the measurement sits at 4mA, the system can immediately distinguish a valid minimum reading from a dead circuit. A reading of 0mA indicates a hardware fault or a disconnected wire.
Maintenance teams use this distinction to identify wiring issues without specialized test equipment.
