Integration Architecture
Electronic component packaging designed for direct mounting onto the surface of a printed circuit board eliminates the need for through-hole leads. An smt package uses metallic pads or solder balls to establish the electrical and mechanical connection. This design allows for higher component density and automated assembly using high-speed pick and place machinery.
Thermal Management
Heat dissipation occurs through the solder joints and the thermal pads on the bottom of the housing. Because an smt package sits close to the board surface, the thermal path is shorter than that of a leaded component. This proximity requires careful design of the copper traces to move heat away from the semiconductor junction.
Qualification Stress
Reliability testing subjects these units to moisture sensitivity level checks before assembly. The plastic body of an smt package absorbs moisture from the air which can expand rapidly and cause cracking during the sudden heat of the soldering oven. Components are baked and sealed in vacuum bags to prevent this failure mechanism.
Solder Joint
The integrity of the connection depends on the volume and placement of the solder paste. Inspection systems verify the fillet shape to ensure the longevity of every smt package.
